So: change of plans. We're going to go to Srinigar tomorrow which though in Kashmir is apparently pretty safe these days. Kashmir has always been famous for its paradisical scenery -- and we're going to stay on a houseboat! Very exciting. (Read Haroun and the Sea of Stories for more on Kashmiri houseboats... and talking hoopoe birds...)
This is the main drag, or "Main Bazaar" right by our hotel. Marty called it the Telegraph Avenue of Delhi. Tye-dye, bong shops, you name it. Fraught at times w/crazy traffic, trash, dogs, honking rickshaws, but pleasantly pedestrian compared to a lot of streets here.
Anybody playing "The Great Game" there, yet?
ReplyDeleteDude. Be safe over there. I can't wait to see pictures of the houseboat. I'm glad you're seasoned travellers, and can take quick changes of plan in stride.

If the Great Game is the one I'm remembering, there was some news that made me glad I hadn't been looking at the news, but no problem for us. We were just a few kilometers from the Line of Control w/Pakistan yesterday though, in a place that is now a ski resort but where militants used to come over the mountains. Not long ago at all. Zoiks.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have read Haroun and the Sea of Stories! I remember it was delightful, but otherwise forget all the details....
ReplyDeleteClearly, Carey, you need to read it again!

Shelley, I have since found out (at least a bit more about) what the Great Game was -- and I was tempted today by a book on it about various secret service types sneaking around the Himalayas... cloak and dagger at 5,000 meters!
