Some people might call El Chalten a one-horse town.
But I like the priorities here.
It was one of our favorite places thus far: a windy mountain town with hiking destinations that can´t be beat. (Not to mention the chocolate on offer...)
We spent much of our time here hiking, and actually did one hike twice to try to see more of the ever-elusive Cerro Torre, a sword-like peak covered with snow and ice.
Cerro Torre -- somewhat visible on the left
Our second visit to the Torre was cloudier but the tower was clearer.
We walked out along a moraine to get a closer view of the glacier pouring into Laguna Torre below.
Brrr.
Aloha. Can I put my gloves back on now?
Some folks doing a Tyrolean traverse across a river to go trek on the glacier -- that looked like a pretty fun way to travel.
Um, might want to swap out those ropes
Waving, not drowning
We didn´t do anything that extreme, but on a day when the weather made hiking less appealing, we find some nice boulders north of town.
I just goofed around but Marty got some good climbing in.
And the view wasn´t half bad.

Of course you like a town that prioritizes pedestrians. Hey, we should go on a vacation to Mackinac Island sometime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinac_Island
ReplyDeleteYou're packing chalk? Chalk?
ReplyDeleteYeah, no revelations there re pedestrian preference. I think Grits has been to Mackinac Island and recommended it too. Sounds great.
ReplyDeleteWell, yes, chalk. It´s light!
I love Mackinac Island! I fell in Lake Huron on a bike there.
