Not your ordinary lagoon
El Calafate´s primary draw is the Perito Moreno glacier, but you can also walk a few minutes away from the sweatshirt and sweet shops of the main street down to a nearby lagoon.
Not too surprisingly, late in the day, this is a good place to see birds. Perhaps more surprisingly, given the climate, this is a good place to see flamingoes.
Quite a backdrop
A hardier species, presumably, than the ones in Florida; I think these are Andean flamingoes.
They look remarkably like ballerinas, don´t they? We didn´t see them dancing, but you can. (Highly recommended!)

Okay: 1) Those things are like torpedos! With necks! I think I'd rather see them in Florida, though, given my difficulty with the cold. 2) That vid was awesome.
ReplyDeleteI have a too-long-4-blog flamingo story, but here's a shorter one: CBS Sun. morning ended w/vid of flamingoes Hialeah Park, FL.
ReplyDeleteYay, glad you watched the video! So worth it. They are pretty weird-looking. We never saw them any closer than this, but from afar at least, they seem eyeless.
