We've been a little slow with updates this week: many wats to see, much coffee to drink.
Last night we got to go (thank you, Varisa!) see an episode of the Ramakien--the Ramayana in Thai--called "The Birth of the Lunar Eclipse." Thai puppet theater is performed with up to three dancers manipulating a teak wood puppet as musicians play to the side of the stage.
This episode also gave a recipe for a magical elixir to ensure immortality (lop off mountain, plop into sea of milk, stir with giant snake) but really it was an opportunity for the wily monkey god Hanuman to fight off rogue demons and try his hand at seduction. The whole show was wonderful but possibly the best part was having Hanuman come into the crowd at the conclusion to flirt with audience members.
We couldn't take any photos but this video gives a pretty good sense of it:
