Miss/Won´t Miss, or anticipatory nostalgia

(An all-inclusive list, perhaps a bit more slanted toward South America)

Won´t Miss:

- Anaerobic bus rides
- Inane, unavoidable Skype conversations overheard at internet cafes
- Traffic that keeps you up at night: the whine of scooter horns in Hanoi, the mid-range rumble of rickshaw motors in Delhi, the belching buses and yelling men in Buenos Aires
- Horizontal rain and borderline hypothermia (Torres del Paine)
- The omni-presence of K´naan´s ¨Wave Your Flag¨

Will Miss:

- Coca tea, made from leaves (Bolivia and Peru, not so legal in the US)
- A more relaxed relationship with time (¡tranquilo!)

- Traveling by water (Lake Titicaca, Vietnam, Kashmir)

- Street markets and the cash-and-carry economy (everywhere)

- Public pay phones

- Being mistaken for French travelers (all over)
- All things Lady Gaga (SE Asia especially)

- The entire South American camelid family

  1. Wait, what? You did not post about Lady Gaga things in SE Asia... Did I miss something? Are there pre-assembled haircan kits? What?

I love the camelid family, too. And I cannot get over that boat. Seriously. Like something out of the Narnia books.

  2. Marty & Elizabeth: I've been lurking for a while and really enjoying all of your posts! I'm also really impressed with how well you've gotten to know the places you've visited -- especially Argentina and Buenos Aires! You don't meet many Americans who know as many things as you do about, for example, speaking backwards (gotan), or the "telos," the idea of (or lack thereof) personal space, etc. Ramiro and I would love to see you in person, so if you have any free time in the Claremont area before you have to go back up north, let me know. Welcome home!

  3. I'll miss this blog! Perhaps that's why I've let myself get a little behind...then I can continue to travel even after you're not.

  4. Aw, thanks, Cy.
Gabi, thanks for reading... we had such a great time with you guys!
JD, wow, spot on with the boat looking Narnia-esque. Alas, nothing so elaborate on Lady Gaga, we just heard a lot in Southeast Asia, esp. Bangkok. We got an earful of international pop hits there.
